Side Effects of Hypnosis: What You Need to Know

by | Mar 14, 2025

While hypnosis is generally safe, it’s important to know what to expect.

Just like any treatment, you might experience some side effects. These can range from mild headaches to feeling a bit dizzy. In this post, we’ll walk you through everything you need to know about hypnosis side effects.

This way, you can make a smart choice about whether hypnosis is right for you.

Let’s dive in!

Quick Primer on Hypnosis

Hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention where your mind becomes more open to positive suggestions. Think of it like being completely absorbed in a good movie – you’re aware of what’s happening, but you’re deeply relaxed and receptive.

During hypnosis, you enter a state of focus where your conscious mind takes a back seat.

This allows your subconscious mind to become more accessible. It’s similar to that peaceful feeling just before falling asleep, where you’re deeply relaxed but still aware.

A fun fact?

You experience hypnosis-like states throughout your day.

When you’re driving on autopilot or lost in a good book, you’re in a light hypnotic state. The difference is that in therapeutic hypnosis, this state is used to make positive changes.

There are several types of hypnosis that can help you achieve your goals:

  • Direct suggestion hypnosis – uses clear, positive statements to promote change.
  • Regression hypnosis – helps you understand and release past experiences.
  • Solution-focused hypnosis – concentrates on achieving specific outcomes.
  • Self-hypnosis – teaches you techniques to practice on your own.

5 Common Side Effects from Hypnosis

While hypnosis is generally safe and effective, you might experience some temporary side effects during or after your sessions.

The most common side effect is personal transformation. Because of these changes, I generally recommend that people do not stand up too quickly immediately after trance, as standing too quickly could cause dizziness or headaches in rare cases.

As long as the person hypnotized spends several seconds to several minutes allowing themselves to transition from the hypnotic state to a regular state, the side effects from emerging are incredibly rare.

(While the brain is integrating change at the deepest level the client may notice up to several hours of difficulty concentrating. I have never had a client report this feeling lasting longer than 2 to 3 hours. I have only ever had a client experience this feeling after positively making a powerful personal change.)

With that said, here’s what you should know about the most common side effects of hypnosis:

Headaches and Dizziness

You might feel a mild headache or slight dizziness after your hypnosis session – similar to how you feel after waking up from a deep nap.

(This usually goes away within an hour or two.)

To help minimize these effects, make sure you:

  • Drink plenty of water before and after your session
  • Take slow, deep breaths when coming out of hypnosis
  • Give yourself a few minutes to fully wake up before driving

Temporary Anxiety

Sometimes you might feel a bit anxious or uneasy during or right after hypnosis.

Think of it like cleaning out a cluttered closet – when you first start organizing, things might feel messy before they get better. This feeling typically fades quickly as your mind processes the experience.

Drowsiness

Feeling sleepy after hypnosis is pretty common – after all, you’ve been in a deeply relaxed state! This is why we recommend you to:

  • Don’t schedule important meetings right after your session
  • Allow yourself some quiet time afterward
  • Avoid operating heavy machinery immediately following hypnosis

Emotional Release

During hypnosis, you might experience unexpected emotions – tears, laughter, or temporary sadness.

This is actually a good sign!

It means you’re processing feelings and making positive changes.

Physical Sensations

You might notice tingling in your hands and feet, or a floating feeling during hypnosis. These are normal responses to deep relaxation and shouldn’t cause concern.

Some people also experience:

  • A heavy feeling in their limbs
  • Changes in body temperature
  • Increased awareness of their heartbeat

Remember, these side effects are usually mild and short-lived.

If you’re concerned about any symptoms, just let your hypnotherapist know – they can adjust their approach to make your experience more comfortable.

Rare Side Effects from Hypnosis

While hypnosis is generally safe and effective, you might experience some uncommon side effects.

  • Temporary confusion can occur after a hypnosis session. Think of it like waking up from a deep afternoon nap – you might feel slightly disoriented for a few minutes. This usually clears up quickly on its own and isn’t cause for concern.
  • Memory fluctuations may happen during or after hypnosis. You might find that certain details from your session feel fuzzy or unclear. This is normal and similar to how you might not remember every detail of a dream upon waking.
  • Dissociation – feeling temporarily disconnected from their surroundings. It’s like being completely absorbed in a good book where you lose track of time and space. This effect typically fades within minutes after your session ends.

These effects are usually mild and short-lived.

Most people find that any discomfort is far outweighed by the positive benefits of hypnosis. Remember that everyone responds differently to hypnosis. What you experience may be different from someone else’s journey.

If you’re concerned about any side effects, your hypnotherapist can help adjust the approach to make your experience more comfortable.

Quick Tip: Having a 10-15 minute rest period after your session can help minimize these effects.

Factors Influencing Side Effects

When it comes to experiencing side effects during hypnosis, several key factors can impact both their likelihood and intensity. Your personal makeup plays a big role in how you respond to hypnosis.

Just like some people get motion sickness while others don’t, your natural susceptibility to hypnotic suggestions varies.

This includes factors like:

  • Your stress levels
  • Sleep quality
  • Overall health
  • Previous experience with hypnosis
  • Expectations about the process

Your mindset going into the session plays a crucial role, too.

If you’re feeling extremely anxious or resistant, you might experience more tension or discomfort. Think of it like trying to relax in a massage – if you’re tense, you won’t get the full benefit.

Remember, most side effects are temporary and mild

How to Manage Hypnosis Side Effects

Here’s how to prepare for and handle common reactions:

Before Your Session:

  • Get enough sleep the night before
  • Eat a light meal 2-3 hours prior
  • Wear comfortable clothing
  • Avoid alcohol or stimulants
  • Write down any concerns to discuss with your hypnotherapist

During Your Session:

During hypnosis, you might experience temporary drowsiness or feel slightly disoriented. This is completely normal and typically passes quickly.

Think of it like waking up from a deep, refreshing nap – you just need a few moments to adjust.

After Your Session:

After your session, take these simple steps to feel your best:

  • Take 5-10 minutes to sit quietly before driving
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Allow yourself time to process the experience
  • Get some light exercise if you feel sluggish
  • Write down any insights or experiences

Some people report feeling emotional or having vivid dreams after hypnosis.

This is your mind processing the work you’ve done – like cleaning out a closet, things might feel messy before they get organized. These effects usually resolve within 24-48 hours.

Quick Fixes

If you experience headaches or dizziness, try these quick fixes:

  • Take slow, deep breaths
  • Have a small snack
  • Rest in a quiet space
  • Apply a cool compress to your forehead

Stay in communication with your hypnotherapist about any concerns – they can adjust their approach to better suit your needs. Most importantly, be gentle with yourself.

Give your mind and body time to integrate the positive changes you’re making through hypnosis.
